Kuala Lumpur is becoming increasingly popular among remote workers with a recent global survey showed Kuala Lumpur jumping from 84 to 22 spot. Kuala Lumpur’s 62-spot leap positions the Malaysian capital as a top global destination for remote work, according to a report by Remote, a prominent HR platform, that ranked the 100 best cities for remote work.

An in-depth analysis identified several factors that contributed to Kuala Lumpur’s improved ranking, including a robust Internet infrastructure, captivating cultural and natural attractions, and a relatively affordable cost of living. The report also lists Madrid, Spain; Madeira, Portugal; Toronto, Canada; Auckland, New Zealand; Tokyo, Japan; and Taipei, Taiwan among the top 10 destinations worldwide for remote work.

Kuala Lumpur’s rise reflects a broader trend in Asia, where cities like Taipei, ranked 8th, and Bangkok, ranked 16th, are also climbing in the rankings. Singapore, however, was ranked 78th. According to Remote, Kuala Lumpur, along with Madrid, Bangkok, Bridgetown, and Madeira, stood out for their attractive remote work visa programs and incentives, securing the top five spots globally. “For over half a century, the Malaysian economy has experienced significant economic growth, driven by gains in the mining, tourism, commerce, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing industries in particular. “KL is home to a burgeoning tech sector with a strong base of digital talent and highly skilled services professionals,” it said adding that KL is a prime destination for employers looking for quality team members.

The report said that in a post-pandemic world, remote work is rapidly becoming a more established lifestyle choice, making it crucial for remote workers to choose the right destination. “This year’s list of the top global destinations for remote work reflects not just the best places to live and work remotely, but also the evolving landscape of what remote professionals need to thrive in a post-pandemic world. “One of the most exciting aspects of distributed work is how it can enable an exchange of cultures, ideas, and innovations and enrich communities,” said Remote’s co-founder and chief executive officer Job van der Voort.
