Two of Malaysia’s Premier Digital Tech Universities – Multimedia University (MMU) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) – have entered into agreements with three leading UK universities: the University of Birmingham, Manchester Metropolitan University and Northumbria University. This reinforces the long-term partnership between the UK and Malaysia to develop tech ecosystems together.

This is the second in a series of UK-Malaysia tech announcements since the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo, visited the UK in July 2019. H.E. Charles Hay MVO, the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, said, “These university collaborations will prepare Malaysia’s already tech-savvy population for the future job market which is constantly redefined by rapid digital innovations. They are also the latest examples of the UK-Malaysia education partnerships where Malaysians get to study in an international environment at some of the UK’s leading universities.”

Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Communications and Multimedia, said, “It is important for us to develop a strong talent pipeline to fully harness the socio-economic opportunities resulting from tech adoption on a large scale. “We have made great strides in developing a holistic talent ecosystem and today’s announcements by two of Malaysia’s Premier Digital Tech Universities will help to further strengthen that.”

Natalie Black, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific, said, “Demand in Malaysia for digital talent is expected to grow by 15% annually. I am therefore delighted that these leading universities from the UK and Malaysia will be collaborating to meet the digital demand for skills. This will also strengthen Malaysia’s value proposition as a regional tech hub and help attract additional investment by UK businesses.”

From September 2019, MMU undergraduate students will benefit from studying at the following two UK partner universities, through newly-established articulation pathways, besides the existing articulation programme with Hull University Business School for business programmes. Being part of the articulation programme allows MMU students to experience different learning styles, as well as to gain new cultural insights.
