Budding data wizards, coding ninjas and digital disruptors were discovered at CIMB Group’s inaugural 3D Conquest – a hackathon-style competition open to university students across ASEAN.
Thirty-three teams involving 115 participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam vied for the title of Regional Champion in their respective categories. Each Regional Champion was rewarded with US$8,000 plus a trip to Silicon Valley, and all 115 contestants received a standing job or internship offer from CIMB.
At the Grand Finale, three teams were crowned Champions in their respective categories of Data Science, Fintech and Coding.
The Regional Champion for the Data Science category was Team Jet Et Al, from Thammasat, Chulalongkorn and Mahidol Universities, Thailand who used alternative sources of data to assess loan applicants’ credit risk, to supplement traditional credit risk models, while servicing the unbanked population in the ASEAN market.
Team JAKE from University of Reading, Malaysia – Regional Champion for the Fintech category – developed a banking solution for the family that incorporated Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) elements, giving parents better insights and control while introducing children to financial management.
Team Mamadei from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Malaysia swept the Regional Champion title in ‘Coding’ where they developed a payment application that incorporates digital tokens for authenticating transactions.
The 3D Conquest is part of CIMB’s wider strategic initiative to help the bank embrace the digital revolution via a group-wide digital development initiative. The ‘3D’ stands for Digital, Data, and Disruption.
