If you are a digital tech professional, student or job seeker, attending a hackathon to future-proof your skills or boost your employability is a must, according to Hays CIO, Steve Weston.
Hackathon’s are now growing rapidly in popularity in the corporate world, with more than 1,000 companies running over 3,400 events in 2016. While two-thirds of last year’s events took place in the tech industry, hackathons are increasingly moving away from the domain of tech companies and being more widely used by companies from many sectors.
Steve Weston says, “Once the domain of the start-up culture, hackathons are now very much storming into the mainstream as businesses clamour to find more innovative ideas, create new and exciting products, and even find and recruit digital tech talent.”
Hackathon’s bring together tech professionals to create something new or solve a tricky issue in a unique or innovative way, whether it be through an app, robotics or a new business model. The events attract a diverse crowd of talent from the tech industry, from those starting out to the more experienced professionals.
Steve adds, “Hackathons bring a wide range of benefits to businesses large and small, and across all industries. The variety of the people who attend brings diversity of thought, and as a result, innovative prototypes and ideas are often generated. If it wasn’t for hackathons, the Facebook “like” button and “chat” functionality would not exist and neither would the GroupMe messaging app.”
The benefits to Hackathon’s do not lie solely with businesses, there are many reason tech candidates should consider attending an event. Steve highlights some of those benefits.
