Remittances by legal foreign workers doubled from RM10 billion in 2009 to almost RM20 billion in 2012. The top five countries that received remittances from Malaysia last year are Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, India and the Philippines It is reported that with the global financial market’s fluctuations, Malaysia has experienced a moderate capital outflow. However, capital outflow is happening in an organised manner and it does not affect the economy. Putrajaya has no figures on the money remitted by illegal foreign workers.
