The European Union has reached a long-awaited agreement on rules governing gig work. The agreement paved the way for stronger protection for the 28 million people across the bloc working for companies including Uber and Deliveroo. The majority of these workers are currently self-employed but companies that control workers’ hours, their appearance at work and their ability to turn down work, among other conditions, will have to class them as employees under the proposals.
Workers would be eligible to receive social security and other benefits, leading to extra costs for companies. The council of EU member states will now enter negotiations with the European parliament over the text.
