The Cambodian Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has signed an agreement with the Human Resource Development Unit of the Republic of Korea to make it smoother and easier for Cambodian workers to be recruited under Korea’s Employment Permit System (EPS).
Heng Sour, Minister for Labour and Vocational Training, met with Lee Woo Yong, Head of the Human Resource Development Unit, Ministry of Employment and Labour of the Republic of Korea (HRDK).
In a meeting on April 19, it was noted that Korea is emerging as a good labour market for Cambodian workers.
It is a market, where Cambodian workers can gain essential skills so that they can enter the skilled workforce on their return to the country, said the Ministry in a statement.
Labour Minister Heng Sour said that the new initiative with Korea will not only focus on recruitment but also “strengthen the employment skills of Cambodian workers.”
Korea’s Employment Permit System (EPS) allows employers in Korea, who have failed to hire locals to legally employ foreign workers.
Some of the industries in Korea that are currently facing labour shortages include agriculture, stockbreeding, fishery, construction and manufacturing.
To ensure transparency and prevent corrupt practices, the Korean government prefers working directly with government agencies and institutions in other countries for the EPS.
Labour Minister Heng Sour said the employment of workers under the Employment Permit System (EPS) and the expansion of the labour market on the E-7 visa type was in line with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s plan to expand opportunities for Cambodian workers.
The Minister also said that the Korean Ministry of Labor would help workers acclimatise by teaching them Korean. At technical and vocational training institutes, Korean would be taught to workers enrolling for EPS.
Cambodia has been sending workers under the EPS scheme since 2006, said Lee Woo Yong, Head of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Labor, Korea. – Khmer Times
