Malaysia Minister of Human Resource, V. Sivakumar

The Malaysian Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar has given an assurance that there will be no reduction in the workforce following the government’s proposed move to halt monopolistic businesses. However, this is subject to the condition that if more existing monopolies are dismantled in the country.

The HR Minister also added that currently the issue does not arise as the demand for labour in the country is high. The matter came out when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have said that the government was reviewing all existing monopolies in the country to ensure that the public enjoyed fair and better service.

Anwar was commenting on whether the government was looking to unravel more monopolies following the decision to end Puspakom Sdn Bhd’s (Puspakom) monopoly on vehicle inspections. Previously, Anwar said had the government are considering Touch ‘n Go’s monopoly on highway toll collection.

The government was also serious about breaking the monopoly in the hiring of foreign workers so that no party will be able to reap high profits from the current needs of industries. V. Sivakumar also said that as Malaysia’s economy is slowly getting better, labour market is also improving but the problem he sees is that many of the unemployed are still too choosy about jobs.
