The unemployment rate in Thailand for Q2 2022 was 1.37 per cent — the lowest it has ever been since the pandemic started in 2020. According to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), that percentage comes from 550,000 unemployed people from a total workforce of 39.8 million.
The same figure during Q1 2021 was 1.53 per cent; going back further, it was 1.69 per cent in 2020 and 1.93 per cent in 2021.
Meanwhile, employment in Q2 increased by 3.1 per cent year-on-year for a total of around 39 million people. A large portion of this increase comes from the steep rise in employment in the non-agricultural sector that employed 27.4 million people during the period. Wholesale/retail and transportation/storage sectors also reported growth in employment.
The NESDC added that the rise in employment rate is an indicator for the improving economy on a rebound following the pandemic. Workers in the private sector are now benefiting from the demand for workers, including migrants. Thailand now has around 2.2 million migrant workers, down from the previous 3.1 million before the Covid-19 pandemic.
