Ericsson, a Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company, has selected Malaysia as the first location in Southeast Asia where it will be manufacturing 5G equipment for domestic and regional markets. The company plans to begin the manufacturing of its “latest, most advanced” 5G radios in the country in Q3 this year.
On why Malaysia was selected as the first location in the region, David Hägerbro, President & CEO of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, cited the country’s availability of a skilled workforce, and the strong infrastructure that it offers. “It is also an expression of Ericsson’s long-term commitment to the country, including the 5G network that we are rolling out,” he added. In line with these manufacturing plans, Hägerbro shared that Ericsson will be stepping up its investments and creating more employment opportunities in the country. He noted: “The collaboration is expected to reach up to 1,200 students in the first year alone and will enable UTM students to participate and contribute to the country’s digital economy and Industry 4.0 transformation.”
