According to the 2012 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey, there were 259 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, which was far above the 102 post-natal deaths per 100,000 live births targeted in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015. Victoria Fanggidae, the research manager of Center for Welfare Studies, has urged the new government to step up of transportation infrastructure; ensuring mothers are able to reach hospitals on time before delivery. Many come from poor provinces, while some consist of small islands.
