Almost 50% of Australian workers who had taken time off work from depression kept the reason hidden from their employer, according to a national study released by SANE Australia. Those who did not inform their employer the real reason felt they would put their job at risk. SANE Australia CEO Jack Heath said depression means more than just feeling down, and it is a serious condition which affects every aspect of a person’s life, including relationships at work and home. He added that it is important to increase awareness and change attitudes and behaviours to reduce the stigma that is attached to mental illness
