SUSTAINABLE STEPS FORWARD: CIMB VIETNAM'S JOURNEY TO THE HR ASIA SUSTAINABLE WORKPLACE AWARD 2024
Since our inception, CIMB Vietnam has been unwavering in its commitment to embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) excellence into every aspect of our organization. These principles are not mere values but the essence of our culture, guiding us to be deliberate and conscientious in all our endeavors. Our employees are at the heart of our mission, playing an essential role in driving every step toward our ESG objectives.
Leading Green Initiatives
Our steadfast dedication to community support and sustainability fuels our innovative ideas and fundraising efforts for impactful projects. A shining example of this commitment is the "Tank of Love" initiative, funded by the Run4Fund Challenge. Through this initiative, our entire staff united to raise funds for water tanks and solar lights in the critically underserved Gia Bac Commune, Lam Dong Province. Our efforts are making a tangible difference, providing farmers with access to safe and clean water, enabling children to study in the evening, and ensuring early-rising hillside farm workers can travel safely.“Our ‘Tank of Love’ initiative truly embodies the spirit of our team. It’s inspiring to see our efforts making a significant impact on the lives of the Gia Bac community,” shares Minh-Thu Huynh from the Operational Risk team and “Tank of Love” Project Lead.
Continuing our passion for giving back, our flea market allowed staff to donate their pre-loved items to new owners. This not only helps reduce waste but also supports the fund for disadvantaged students in remote mountainous areas of Vietnam through the "Nuoi Em" Project.
“The flea market perfectly illustrates how small actions can lead to substantial changes. By donating pre-loved items, we promote sustainability and support education for disadvantaged students. Additionally, it’s a fun event that fosters camaraderie among colleagues. Many of us were excited to purchase pre-loved items at great prices while contributing to the charity fund,” explains Hoai-Thu Le from the Support Center team, “Nuoi Em” Project Lead.
It’s a meaningful fusion of our commitment to sustainability, assisting those in need and promoting responsible consumption and community care.
Partnering with GreenViet, an NGO dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable development, we collaborated to plant trees at universities around HCMC. This physically demanding experience promoted an urban sustainable lifestyle, reinforced our commitment to a greener future, and enhanced community relationships.
Our leadership team sets a robust example by embracing eco-friendly and healthy lifestyles, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability, and fostering a culture of green practices. From using canvas tote bags for shopping and commuting to work by public transportation, to bringing personal tumblers and mugs to work, we live green because it’s integral to who we are!
Simple habits, such as turning off lights during breaks and conserving water, have become ingrained in our culture. The "Sort Smart, Trash Right" initiative mapped employee trash behavior and bins, upholding our promise to establish comprehensive waste management. We are dedicated to reducing single-use plastics through reusable alternatives and solutions designed to minimize plastic waste. This program has significantly reduced our waste and exemplifies the responsible work we excel at.
Additionally, we reduce paper usage with our "Think Before You Print" initiative, favoring electronic copies over physical paper. Encouraging digital signatures and contract signing further supports our sustainability goals.
Green Office and LEED Certification
Our commitment to sustainability extends to our office environment. In May 2024, the new office of CIMB Vietnam obtained LEED Gold Certification, a significant recognition of our environmental and occupational health efforts within the workplace. Located in the Green Mark-certified Hallmark Building, our office features energy-efficient systems, eco-friendly materials, and a design focused on employee well-being. It includes real-time indoor air quality monitoring, energy-saving lighting, and a double-glass façade that regulates sunlight and temperature. We take pride in working in one of the few offices in Vietnam with such a prestigious LEED Gold certification. These sustainable features not only benefit the environment but also enhance our daily working experience. “These sustainable features make our day-to-day working so much more enjoyable,” adds Minh-Trieu Nguyen from the Finance team. “We are excited to be part of an organization that genuinely prioritizes sustainability.”
This qualification underscores our commitment to integrating sustainability in all areas of our business and sets new standards for environmentally friendly office spaces across Vietnam.
Looking Ahead
Receiving the HR Asia Sustainable Workplace Award 2024 is a significant milestone in CIMB Vietnam’s sustainability journey. This honor acknowledges our commitment and fuels our drive for the future. As McKinsey notes, our improvement on the Organizational Health Index (OHI) has placed us in the top decile among ASEAN Financial Institutions for two consecutive years, 2022 and 2023, after starting in the 2nd quartile in 2020. This achievement is a source of immense pride and motivates us to continually raise the bar.Looking forward, we pledge to build a working environment fundamentally rooted in sustainability, inclusivity, and empowerment, aiming to create a lasting, positive impact on our community and the environment.
“All eyes are on high spirits and all dreams of new accomplishments. Collectively, we will make a difference and ensure that this is the generation of care and sustainability,” concludes Ms. Tran Thi Huong Anh, Head of Human Resources & Corporate Services.
