MAMEE anchors its digital transformation on 4 key guiding principles. 1 – Pivoting to a data driven organisation, where we strive to empower employees with access to big data to cultivate data driven decision making organisational culture. 2 - We digitalise, not digitise, we steer clear of the common pitfall of merely “converting” processes into digital formats but embarking on the more painful (but rewarding) route of total business process reengineering by leveraging on digital technologies to achieve better insights and efficiencies. 3 – Adopting a cloud-smart approach, whilst wanting to be asset light and embrace cloud native or by-design As-a-Service model to accelerate innovation and cost optimisation; as opposed to a cloud-first strategy, select landscapes remain on-premises if deemed optimal. 4 – Digitalisation 3S of Suitable, Scalable and Sustainable, not an easy task but we pride ourselves on finding the balance between being at the forefront of technology and achieving MAMEE’s growth strategies by selectively embarking on fit-for-purpose digital initiatives – we may not be there first, but we want to reach there the right way.
Getting it right beats getting there first - finding the right balance of investing in best integrated systems or integrating the best systems.
Tan Jit Wei, CTO, MAMEE
As often mentioned by our Group CEO Pierre Pang, one key element of success is always People and that is undeniably the biggest challenge in our digital transformation journey – ensuring that our people are enabled to access new technologies, upskilled to be capable of sustaining the technologies and ultimately empowered to expand the advancement at scale within the organisation.
We started off with the fundamentals – having data at your fingertips. With MAMEE’s “Ke Awan” or journey to the cloud campaign before the pandemic hit (Phew!) we enabled access and mandated usage of critical applications, data and collaboration tools that supports remote and flexible work arrangements – and before we know it, COVID19 came along. This expedited the entire change management process and within weeks we became a mobile workforce capable of operating 24/7 throughout out the pandemic.
Then came the impending issue – how can we process mountains of physical paperwork if everyone is collaborating remotely? Project Papercut was initiated and within a quarter, we moved more than 70 manual paper forms and its associated approval workflow online whilst streamlining overlapping legacy business processes – killing two birds with one stone at its best. At time of writing, we have fully digitalised our requisition-to-hire, technology asset acquisition and disposal, change management, master data management, quality assurance, travel management and legal trademark workflows.
With People enabled and Processes optimised, our growth Plan needs to be agile in reaction to the market conditions – we needed quick and accurate insights to action to pivot our employees away from spreadsheets and the “it has always been done this way” mindset to a data-driven and artificial intelligence assisted environment hence the inception of Project Insights. Collating our valuable data sources, MAMEE deployed its management dashboard and sales tracking reports on the Microsoft PowerBI analytics platform thus enabling and empowering employees direct and near real-time access to data that traditionally took hours if not weeks to compile from various departments. Above and beyond internal data sources, these dashboards are enriched and overlayed with external market research data for us to benchmark and validate our market strategies. As of 2023, one third of MAMEE executives have access to this goldmine of information from the comfort of their own home. A cloud-based trade promotion management platform was also introduced to allow real-time “what-if” simulations of trade promotions ensuring effective use of budget, best return-of-investment of promotions and end-to-end traceability of trade claims.
We were often baffled by the requests of our merchandisers for mobile phones with more storage space and administrative clerks asking for more online storage only to discover that thousands of retail outlet shelf photos are taken daily by merchandisers, shared on WhatsApp group chats, downloaded by clerks, eyeballed by supervisors, tabulated into Spreadsheet over a 10-day reporting cycle to analyse our share of shelf and out of stock situations. While we have always pondered upon the big buzz word Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) and how it could transform our business, we found our holy grail of AI integration – AI vision processing for merchandisers. In 2023, we deployed an AI assisted merchandising mobile application to more than 100 merchandisers across the country with the aim to eliminate the mundane photo processing work (by letting AI do the work) and reduce a 10-day reporting cycle to just 1-day, where key indicators such as competitor pricing, shelf space and placement are accessible centrally on a dashboard. We gained not only near-real time visibility of our merchandisers’ efficiency and coverage across the country, but also the ability to analyse and react to the ever-evolving market conditions, quicker than we could have imagined.
As the saying goes, digital transformation is a journey and not a destination. MAMEE have just started on this journey. Whilst we have lots more to do, we have seen and reap benefits of digitalisation in the organisation from significant cost optimisation through cloud platforms to the simplest of performing an approval workflow online – as a 53-year-old Malaysian company, we may not be digital native, but we are ready for a digital future!
