OUR HISTORY

GLOBAL BUSINESS POWER CORPORATION (GBP), with a total gross capacity of 1,091 MW, is one of the leading independent power producers in Visayas and Mindanao. Having diversified power generation facilities that are capable of supplying base, intermediate, peak load, and ancillary support, GBP offers flexible energy solutions that can serve the varying power requirements of the market.

GBP is fully owned by Meralco PowerGen (MGen), following the transfer of Beacon PowerGen Holdings, Inc. and JG Summit Holdings, Inc.’s shareholdings in GBP. This synergy allows GBP and MGen to better serve the country’s growing need for sustainable energy solutions through GBP’s operational expertise in running power generation facilities in Visayas and Mindanao and MGen’s strong presence in Luzon.

Tracing its origin in 2003 as Mirant Global Corporation, GBP has been instrumental in shaping the Visayas into what it is today and what it will become in the future. In 2011, the commercial operations of GBP’s baseload power plants in Cebu and Iloilo resolved the frequent brownouts and stabilized the power supply in the region, which effectively boosted the investor confidence in these areas. Consequently, Cebu and Iloilo became dynamic hubs of commerce and tourism, catapulting the overall growth of the Visayas region.

In 2017, GBP broadened its reach outside the Visayas to include foothold in the emerging Mindanao market through a 50% stake in Alsons Thermal Energy Corporation (ATEC), which owns Sarangani Energy Corporation and San Ramon Power Inc.

Talent Management

One of GBP’s core values is “Care for Employees” – a commitment the company purposefully adheres to, for we believe that effective people management is key to achieving our business’ greater purpose of raising the quality of life of the Filipino and fueling the nation’s economic development. As such, we ensure that we not only attract the right people for the job but that we foster a safe and healthy work environment where they could grow and bask in the fulfillment of their work.

In an effort to take care of its people against the coronavirus, GBP’s parent company, MVP Group, has arranged for an inclusive vaccination plan that shall cover the procurement of vaccines not just for all employees but also for their qualified dependents and household members. We are now continuously rolling out the available vaccines in batches to our people here in GBP.

With the coronavirus being around longer than expected, GBP understands the prolonged stress brought about by this challenging situation to our employees. With that in mind, GBP has come up with ways to engage with our people to help alleviate their worries and to provide them with learnings that they could use in navigating this unprecedented situation.

For one, the GBP Institute for Energy (GIE) held its first digital roadshow last Q4 of 2020 tackling a range of topics from digital transformation, resilience and work and customer excellence. This was attended by at least 300 employees coming from the Visayas and Mindanao. Moreover, we organized technical trainings and qualifications for our operations and maintenance staff using Google Classroom as our main platform, supplemented with online reading materials. By Q1 of 2021, we continued our participation to the International Women’s Day celebration by holding relevant webinars and discussions. We have also consistently produced the GBP Energy Podcast featuring stories like dealing with stress, coping with loss and expanding to renewable energy.

Organizational Structure

GBP follows a hierarchical organizational structure employing an approximate of 950 individuals sitewide. The Company is being led by GBP President, Mr. Jaime T. Azurin, who sets the overall strategic policies and direction. Simultaneously, the Company’s Board of Directors carries an oversight function across the whole organization.

Future Direction

Consistent with our vision to become a foremost provider of sustainable energy solutions, GBP plans to further grow its business by diversifying our portfolio to include renewable energy (RE) and provide energy services beyond power generation. Through our people, we are poised to operate our first solar plant in 2022, signaling our entry to the Luzon region and the RE market.

Our aspiration is to establish GIE as a center of technical leadership and clean energy in the country, where our people can train various stakeholders in the power industry.

As a new member of the ONE MERALCO family, our aim is to align our plans with the group’s long-term sustainability agenda towards a cleaner and more affordable sources of energy to serve the growing requirements of our country.
