It is not in Europe, but in Indonesia, that the roots of Royal Dutch Shell are planted. The company was born over 100 years, through the discovery of an oil well in Pangkalan Brandan (North Sumatera) in 1885.

Lubricants and Retail
Our lubricants business was the starting point of our downstream presence in Indonesia. Today, we have the largest lubricants market share in the country, serving both motorists and industrial customers. This market is expected to grow as figures for vehicle ownership have increased in the country in the last few years. Shell expects, therefore, to increase its market share even further.In the B2B sector, we are committed to growing together with our customers by offering our expertise and technical support. To our retail customers, we deliver quality lubricants that ensure they get the best value and performance from their vehicles which does not compromise on their safety.
In 2005, with the opening of our first fuel station in Lippo Karawaci, Shell become the first international energy company to have a retail presence in Indonesia. Today, we operate over 100 retail sites in Greater Jakarta, Bandung, East Java and North Sumatera under the CODO (company-owned, dealer-operated) or DODO (dealer-owned, dealer-operated) scheme.
To better serve our growing lubricans market, Shell has, since 2015, operated its own lubricants blending plant in Marunda, Bekasi, boasting an installed capacity of 136 million liters per year. Today, almost all of Shell’s lubricant products in Indonesia are “Made in Indonesia”.
At Shell we are constantly evolving our products in line with modern vehicle engine innovations and the needs of our customers. Recent examples include our PurePlus and Dynaflex technologies. Our innovation in Downstream businesses will play an important role in the future of mobility.
Shell Indonesia is also known for revolutionising the customer experience at our retail stations, offering quality and innovative products and services. These include the introduction of Lube Bays for easier customer convenience; Shell Select stores, Deli2Go stations and Ready-to-Eat brands to serve our customers’ lifestyle needs.
Commercial solutions
Shell has also played a part in the development of Indonesia’s infrastructure.In 2006, Shell started its Commercial Fuels and Marine businesses in Indonesia, providing oil products and related technical support to the industrial, transport and mining sectors. Our Shell Marine business offers marine lubricants for both local and international customers.
We serve international customers at the key ports of Jakarta and Surabaya while local customers, can purchase our marine lubricants directly from Shell Marine distributors across the country.
We currently have stock point centres in Medan, Batam, Jakarta, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Makasar, Bitung, and Sorong, but are continuously expanding our port coverage.
Shell also provides bitumen products for Indonesia’s highways and urban roads, having established a vast network of third-party bulk depots, including in growth areas like Kalimantan. Shell Indonesia drum supply also covers more than 10 distribution areas in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the Nusa Tenggara islands.
Trading & Supply
With our extensive network and experience in trading and supply, Shell provides and distributes products to its customers, from us as well as from local suppliers. We currently operate a Shell Distribution Terminal in Gresik, East Java and other third-party terminals – Tanjung Priok in Jakarta; Merak in West Java; and Kuala Tanjung in North Sumatera.Upstream
In Upstream sector, Shell is a strategic partner of INPEX and holds a 35% interest in the Masela PSC, leveraging our related expertise and project delivery capabilities to support INPEX in the development of the Abadi Project.Working together to create a better Indonesia
Shell has a long tradition of working closely with the communities it works in. We make considerable efforts to understand their needs and to build relationships with organisations and institutions which are already working in these areas.In Indonesia, our Waste Management (DESA Bersemi) programme in Marunda, Bekasi offers training in composting and sustainable urban farming. The programme has successfully trained 60 cadres. It has also created some models, comprising House of Compost, Waste Bank, in addition to Sustainable urban-farming and Creative Industry Community. Desa BERSEMI program reflects Shell’s commitment to support every community development efforts in all working areas.
Our core social investment programmes comprise of Shell LiveWIRE which offers entrepeneurship training to young people from18 to 32 years old; and Shell Road Safety which promotes careful and responsible road behaviour.
At Shell, we also want to inspire individuals, communities, governments, and businesses across Asia to come together and drive change in a responsible way. That is why we created Make the Future, which encourages and showcases new and innovative ideas for a cleaner energy future.
The Shell Eco-marathon is a key part of Make the Future. A competition about developing innovative mobility solutions, it challenges engineering, design, science and technology students to design, build and drive the world’s most energy-efficient vehicle.
Indonesian student teams have participated in the Asia instalment of the Shell Eco-marathon since 2010, and the number of teams participating has increased with each year. Indonesia has taken top positions annually in the UrbanConcept category.
