Together Creating Impacts Amidst Pandemic Time
Bukalapak is a technology company founded in 2010 with a mission to create a fair economy for all. We pride ourselves on being an “All Commerce” company instead of just your everyday e-commerce platform. For more than 11 years, Bukalapak has created a significant socio-economic impact on millions of enterprising Indonesians. As recognition, two of the founders received the Badge of Honor Satyalancana Wira Karya from the Government of Indonesia in 2016 and 2019 for their efforts and devotion to the nation.Bukalapak All Commerce platform revolves around two core services, Online Marketplace “Bukalapak” and Online-to-Offline (“O2O”) “Mitra Bukalapak.” In 2020, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, 4 million new MSMEs joined Bukalapak’s platforms. At the end of 2020, our Online Marketplace is home to more than 6.5 million merchants and 100 million users.
The O2O is connected to more than 7 million Mitras, mom-and-pop kiosks, and agents ready to provide consumer goods and financial solutions to the people.
In our words, “we envision a tech-enabled economy where everyone from all walks of life has the options and opportunities to get more out of life, powered by our innovative online and offline platforms. We believe everyone deserves a fair chance to create a better life for themselves and their loved ones.”
Our Talent is The Main Enabler to Achieve our Mission and Therefore Keeping Them Safe, Healthy, and Productive during Pandemic is Our Utmost Priority
The employees of Bukalapak play the most critical role in our pursuit to achieve the Bukalapak mission. However, Covid-19 Pandemic has created new challenges in every business. As much as we’d like to keep our “business-as-usual” practices, we need to ensure our employees’ wellbeing because keeping them safe and healthy is our utmost priority. As a response to it, in March 2020, we created a hybrid working arrangement where our employees were encouraged to work from home (WFH). To support WFH, we provide employees with office working tools to their homes, such as monitors, printers, internet packages, and other equipment. Meanwhile, we keep open access to work from the office (WFO) for urgent cases by applying Health Protocol guided by the Ministry of Health and WHO. Our offices, currently set up at a maximum of 25% capacity, are regularly disinfected, and the regular staff are regularly tested for Covid-19. We also implemented temperature screening and contact tracing to the employees and visitors on our premises. To keep our employees updated on the current condition, we created the Covid-19 handbook and bi-weekly Covid-19 newsletter. We also built a communication channel to report to the internal task force if they have the Covid-19 symptoms or recently have been contacted with the patients. The task force team will follow up and assist in tracing, testing, and securing their medical benefits until they are fully recovered.
We are also aware that the new normal may give some difficulties for our employees to adapt. Hence, we have been conducting several initiatives to keep our employees wellbeing. One of them is by launching the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), where we provide one-on-one sessions between employees and a psychologist to help them resolve both their work-related and personal issues. We also launched bi-weekly communication campaigns on wellbeing called “FeelGood!” to help our employees keep thriving. Some topics are related to mindfulness, gratitude, self-love, and any fun tips to maintain productivity while WFH. To support the campaign, we also conducted virtual fun activities like mindfulness sessions, virtual tours, cooking demos, mini hackathons, casual sharing sessions, and many more to boost their energy and happiness.
As a result, in our latest WFH survey held in March 2021, 87% of our respondents said they either feel good or great with the WFH arrangement. At the same time, 97% of our respondents feel trusted by their direct manager. In terms of productivity, 92% of our respondents said they are equally or more productive with the working arrangement.
Creating an Impact and Growing Together
Creating an impact on our employees is as important as creating an impact on society. We see talent development and engagement as one of the keys to create a place where people can learn and develop to become the best version of themselves. Therefore, we have strengthened our Learning & Development program by launching Buka 101 (a bite-sized lesson around professional and personal development topics) and BukaWawasan (a forum for sharing sessions on various topics). Our talents also have access to our Bukalapak DRIVE (a performance management system that focuses on continuous feedback, recognition, and development) and a company-wide OKR system as a collaborative goal-setting tool used by teams and individuals to set challenging and ambitious goals with measurable results. As a data-driven company, we conduct a regular internal engagement survey called “The Happiness Survey”. The data collected from this survey serve as the basis for us to develop programs and initiatives. Based on our latest Happiness Survey conducted at the end of 2020, our overall happiness score has increased by more than 10% compared to the previous year, with a significant increase in Employer Concerns in Employees’ Wellbeing and Values Implementation aspects.
Communicating the Mission to Employees
We understand that a mission is just jargon without execution. Therefore in our day-to-day activities, Core Values, and Employer Value Proposition (EVP), we focus on providing the best working experience by embracing Gotong Royong culture (lit: working together) and providing an opportunity to develop for everyone so that all employees feel empowered and supported in their efforts to produce game-changing solutions and create impacts. To keep motivating our employees about our mission, we are also creating various platforms where our top management and employees can share their ideas and important milestones, achievements, and impact stories. Our CEO letter has been delivered to our employees through e-mail on a weekly basis, we also deliver our regular newsletter called BukaKabar, where our employees can read many inspiring stories from our merchants and Mitra Bukalapak about how much our works have impacted their lives, and we also created a channel called Good News From Bukalapak, where our employees can share their impact stories.
Once the employees get the sense of meaning and purpose of what we are doing as a team, we believe they will also be our best ambassadors in creating impacts and spreading the spirit.
