Sarawak Energy is a vertically integrated power utility and Malaysia's largest renewable energy provider, with a vision to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for Sarawak by meeting Southeast Asia’s need for renewable energy. To deliver this vision, digitalisation has been key in modernising and transforming our business.

We embarked on our digital transformation and modernisation journey in 2018 and introduced a Digitalisation Blueprint to drive our aspiration to become a sustainable digital utility by 2025. Sarawak Energy’s early investment in digital infrastructure has enabled us to support our workforce to be agile and productive under any circumstances. Modernisation in our business operation processes and systems allows us to stay ahead of the curve while supporting the state of Sarawak’s Digital Economy agenda.

As a vertically integrated power utility, Sarawak Energy covers both upstream and downstream operations – resulting in a very complex value chain for the Company that produces a large amount of data and information requiring effective management.

Our digital transformation journey focuses on integrating the right technology and systems into the end-to-end of our business supply chain to increase efficiency while optimising resource allocation and improving the bottom line. It is built on five key strategies:
  • A robust and fit-for-purpose digital foundation that scales as needed, is secure from physical and cyber threats, and can be sustainably maintained and grown
    • This enables us to meet growing corporate data traffic needs, provide internet connectivity from all our premises, support business smart transformation, and ensure all employees are equipped with the necessary tools to fully benefit from our digitalisation drive.
  • A modernised new way of working comprising application and process optimisation, platform modernisation and automation through a series of centralised and integrable systems
    • This enables us to:
      • practise smart working and agile collaboration across the Company, especially in utilising virtual conference systems and cloud storage.
      • deliver optimum organisational efficiency and effectiveness with more focus on employee wellbeing without compromising productivity and business performance.
  • Data as strategic assets, with readily available information and the establishment of a single source of truth while allowing employees to unlock business insights through advanced analytics
    • Our Data Management Framework includes clear governance roles and responsibilities to facilitate the adoption of best practices and standards, which is key to achieving quality data.
    • By harnessing our data value, we can visualise information related to Sarawak Energy’s key performance metrics, enabling us to derive actionable insights to deliver efficient and optimised operations.
  • Cultivating a smart business
    • This involves the transformation of business operations using the latest technologies to achieve reliable, affordable, and sustainable growth for Sarawak Energy.
    • We have developed business digitalisation blueprints and roadmaps for each of our core lines of business including Digital Power Plant, Smart Grid and Smart Retail to maximise our value and optimise resources such as manpower, time and financial costs.
    • Driving smart business within Sarawak Energy ensures operational efficiency, optimised productivity and reliable power supply for customers.
    • Digitalisation enables the integration of more renewable energies throughout the electrical system, increases network reliability and better management of energy demand. This is vital to support Sarawak’s growth and regional energy transition towards a more sustainable and low-carbon future.
  • Fostering a digital culture and empowering digital people
    • To enable a successful digital transformation, we attract talent with digital competencies and cultivate digital savviness in our workforce.
    • We provide meaningful experiences centred on adopting digital ways of working, building a digital workforce and empowering our digital people with digital toolsets.
    • In building digital people, our digital acculturation programme is focused on building a digital culture comprising experience, literacy, and leadership within the workforce.

This digital shift has significantly reduced silos within the Company and encouraged a high-performance culture characterised by speed and precision. The use of cloud applications has not only improved information sharing and feedback mechanisms but also contributed to environmental sustainability by reducing paper usage.

Overall, digital transformation has allowed Sarawak Energy to achieve more with existing resources – promoting continuous improvement and a sustainable approach to operations.
