We have a unique culture at Aesop, and we are committed to make it even stronger by putting a lot of focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I). We are proud of who we are and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can feel safe and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. Since 2019, we have had a DE&I committee in place to spearhead our initiatives in Asia and Hong Kong.
Globally, we launched our Inclusive Hiring Principles and ran Aesop Inclusive Hiring Based Targeted Selection® pilot training and an annual DE&I learning programme. In 2023, we partnered with MindGym to offer an in-person programme “Leading Inclusively” for people managers, and a virtual session “Building Bridges” for all employees, together with a digital pathway for a multi-channel DE&I learning programme for both office and retail staff.
We also launched different Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), namely Aesop Women, Pride (supporting the LGBT+ community), and Ubuntu (culture ERG), across regions that provides a platform for sharing and celebrating our differences, amplifying our voices and cultivating belonging.
In Hong Kong, we successfully rolled out the global menopause policy and arranged sanitary products in stores and washrooms for female employees. In November 2022, we partnered with The Women’s Foundation (TWF) in Hong Kong to host the Aesop Women Asia Summit with the presence of Fiona Nott, CEO of TWF, and Praveen Choudhary, Managing Director, Head of Asian Gaming, Lodging and Hong Kong Real Estate Research, Morgan Stanley, who sits on TWF’s Male Allies Leadership Council as part of their Male Allies Initiative, a group of business leaders who leverage their collective influence and personal engagement to advance gender equality. Fiona shared insights into the current gender landscape in Asia in terms of women’s barriers to career advancement, the phenomenon of female burnout, and the importance of male allyship, and Praveen built on the area around male allyship to share how male can play a part in gender equity.
We also celebrate key DE&I occasions throughout the year with the International Women’s Day as a signature one. On 8 March 2023, we invited Jennifer Wong (Fafa), the first visually impaired psychologist and hypnotherapist in Hong Kong, and founder of social enterprise Codekey Cookie, to our office for a talk to share how she overcame stigma and challenges when she studied in Canada and during her time setting up the social enterprise in Hong Kong. We also arranged a donation to a local charity Harmony House, which supports abused women and their children, through a charity sale of goody bags. A matched donation was then made by the Aesop Foundation.
At Aesop, we also organized external campaigns related to the DE&I topic including our signature Queer Library and Women’s Library. Last year we hosted the Queer Library at Aesop Gough Street and generated a lot of awareness. We took off all products from the shelves for a few days and displayed books related to the LGBT+ topic. Customers were welcomed to pick up one book per day from the Library to encourage reading and promote literature. We also did a round of internal sharing of books from these Libraries among offices in Asia in celebration of International Women’s Day. In Hong Kong we received books from the Singapore Women’s Library which was held in 2022.
