History and Activities of Fulbright University Vietnam
Fulbright University Vietnam is the first independent not-for-profit liberal arts university in Vietnam. Established as a partnership between the Vietnamese government and the United States, Fulbright’s mission is to foster critical thinking, creativity, and ethical leadership in its students. The roots of Fulbright trace back to the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program (FETP), founded in 1994 as a collaborative graduate teaching program between Harvard Kennedy School and Ho Chi Minh University of Economics. In 2016, FETP’s public policies program expanded, and together with a newly established undergraduate college, became Fulbright University Vietnam, gaining a broader educational mission to provide world-class education across multiple disciplines. Today, the university boasts a 200-member strong international faculty and staff community, and our team is quickly growing.
Fulbright University Vietnam’s educational approach stands apart thanks to its liberal arts model and the school’s focus on experiential learning. Fulbright’s core curriculum encourages students to engage in multidisciplinary investigations so as to develop their intellectual resources, creative problem solving skills, and an appreciation for the interdependence of knowledge areas. The university’s experiential learning model engages students early on via internships, pre-professional experiences, capstones, and research projects. Learning through doing is when students may apply all their knowledge into addressing complex real-world challenges.
Beyond teaching, Fulbright University Vietnam places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and research that addresses pressing societal issues. Our faculty members engage in groundbreaking research across a wide range of subjects, contributing valuable insights to local and international governments, creating valuable impacts on policy-making and sustainable development. We collaborate with local and international NGOs, corporations, and institutions to enhance the quality of education and research, as well as to provide solutions to industries and communities.
Fulbright is also a platform for open and inclusive public dialogues on critical issues. The university holds seminars, conferences, and public lectures that bring together experts, policymakers, and the public to discuss and find solutions to pressing challenges. These events contribute to informed decision-making and promote a culture of open exchange of ideas.
Our faculty and staff are instrumental in every aspect of our campus and university’s functions. We work to contribute to the advancement of Vietnamese society and its global standing. The university envisions a future where its graduates become influential leaders in various sectors, driving positive change and play a crucial role to sustainable development in Vietnam and beyond.
