Sustainability at Cargill in the Philippines

As the world faces extraordinary challenges from climate change to food insecurity delivering on Cargill’s purpose is more critical than ever before. We feel a deep responsibility to protect the planet and its people, and we work everyday to reduce our impact and ensure a better future for all.

Throughout our long history, we have seen how agriculture can be a force of good and be part of the solution to the world’s most urgent challenges. Our sustainability programs in the Philippines are designed to help keep our people and planet thriving for generations to come.

These local sustainability efforts are focused on enriching communities in four key areas:
  • Farmer Livelihood
We promote and support the livelihood of farmers through capacity development, making them more productive, competitive and closely linked to their markets. Our flagship sustainability program for our coconut business is the Sustainable Coconut Oil Production (SCNO), which empowers farmers with improved incomes.
  • Food and Nutrition
We leverage Cargill’s strength in food production, safety, and consumer health to conduct nutrition and feeding programs all year round.
  • Environment and Disaster Response
We advance sustainable agricultural practices across farm and field to mitigate the impact of the climate crisis. We also provide relief and rehabilitation support to farming communities that are affected by natural disasters and the ongoing pandemic.
  • Education
We believe that education promotes inclusive development, so we partner with institutions that embrace the key role of learning in shaping the future of young individuals.

A Good Corporate Citizen Enriching Filipino Communities

Everywhere around the world, Cargill is committed to conducting our business with the highest levels of integrity, accountability, and responsibility. Our businesses and employees are actively engaged in giving back to the local community where we live, work, and do business. Employee Testimonial

Title: My Journey: From Cargill Cares Scholarship Program Recipient to Community Champion
In 1998, I was among the fortunate recipients of the inaugural scholarship program initiated by Cargill Oil Mills Philippines, Inc. This opportunity ignited a profound eagerness within me to eventually become a part of the organization that had supported me through my secondary and tertiary education. The role of a scholar not only motivated me to excel academically but also propelled me to the top of my class.

Upon completing my degree, my determination led me to make two attempts at joining Cargill, with success finally knocking on the door on the third try when I was appointed as a Merchandising Trainee. Over the years, I transitioned from a Buying Laboratory Analyst (1 year) to a Weigher (8 years), and today I proudly hold the position of a Warehouse Coordinator.

My association with this esteemed company has not only elevated my living standards but has also enabled me to provide for my spouse, children, and extend a helping hand to my parents and siblings. This transformation from humble beginnings to a stable life has been made possible through my unwavering dedication to Cargill.

As I embarked on my journey within the organization, I embraced the opportunity to engage with the Cargill Cares Program, a platform designed to contribute to the betterment of our community, as a Cargill Cares Committee member. With guidance from the HR department then, I assumed responsibilities related to the scholarship program, which ranged from school invitations and examinations to background verifications, scholar orientations, and the reimbursement of educational expenses.

The highest point of my volunteer journey was during my high school years when scholars and I were invited to participate in the construction of homes in Habitat, Barangay San Isidro community in General Santos City. Surrounded by Cargill's senior executives and my fellow scholars, I found myself constructing houses and mingling with professionals at a young age. This experience solidified my sense of belonging to the Cargill family and motivated me to dedicate 14 years of my life to volunteering in various corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Another memorable experience is from the Cargill Cares Council's Christmas caroling mission. Navigating challenging area, including muddy roads and boats, we visited less privileged families across Gensan. Witnessing the tears of joy in their eyes as we sang songs and presented small Noche Buena packages left an everlasting impact on my heart. While our contributions may have seemed modest, the happiness we brought to these families was immeasurable.

In the end, my journey with Cargill Oil Mills Philippines, Inc. has been a remarkable tale of growth, gratitude, and giving back. Started as a scholarship recipient, I've become a dedicated community servant, championing Cargill's commitment to fostering positive change in the lives of those who need it most.
