Making UOB (Thai) #Better for Future Ready Organisation

As UOB aims ‘To be the World's Most Trusted bank,’ our PEOPLE are the top priority to meet our aspirations. Since 2018, our employee engagement scores have continuously increased, and our attrition rates have lowered respectively.

Since the end of 2019, we have implemented six key initiatives to ensure stable employee workability during the COVID-19 situation: • Make it bold
  • Making UOB (Thai) #Better’ communication campaign: We created three ‘#Better’ themes; #Better Workplace, #Better Workforce, and #Better Work/Life aiming to create better employee experience.
  • Function Champions: Function champions include representatives from each function who are responsible for communicating activities and driving function engagement.
  • Progress Tracking: Quarterly discussions about progress tracking were held with management committee and function champions. It was an opportunity to request for management support and exchange learning. This action ensured that employee engagement remained an organisation priority.
• Make it fun and interactive:
  • Employee ideas: Through ‘Your Opinion Counts’ activities, employees shared their ideas to improve focused areas. There were 84 ideas with action plans. 12 ideas were selected as winners. Ideas were implemented in 2020.
  • Adding fun and joy to the actions, we arranged ‘Better Battle’ activities quarterly to communicate the bankwide and function actions. People could vote for top 3 impressive actions for an opportunity to win lucky draw prizes.
  • Engagement survey virtual roadshows were arranged by function (47 sessions, covering more than 3,500 employees). We worked with each function champion to understand the pain points and focus areas. It was a re-communication of improvement actions, survey question explanations, and Q&A sessions.

The key improvement actions in 2020 were under 3 themes:

1) #Better Workplace: to cover three main areas regarding the survey result 2019.
  • #Better Physical Work Environment
  • #Better Technology and Work Process
  • #Better Unity through Company Core Values
2) #Better Workforce: to build capability by uplifting employee digital skills, multi-skills, and change mindset.
  • Better U programme
  • Freestyle Online Learning programmes
3) #Better Work/Life: During the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, our HR Communications team worked closely with the Crisis Management Team and Employee Well-being Taskforce, to ensure employees were communicated clearly about key actions taken.
The result of the 2020 employee engagement survey showed an 83% score, a six-point increase from 2019. The score of each dimension increased in comparison to 2019 and was higher than the benchmark target (Asia Pacific banks). The top three dimensions were Transformation & Change (92%), Survey Follow-up (90%), and Risk Management (89%).

We also conducted a COVID-19 survey for employee feedback on Bank actions during the pandemic. Roughly 92% of respondents (4,038 people) indicated that they were coping well with the challenges; 90% said that they could maintain their work effectiveness; and 92% agreed that our Bank demonstrated care for their well-being and safety.

As such, our attrition rate reduced by 10% compared to 2019; while we maintained our capital strong with liquidity position.

While the pandemic still continues in 2021, effective communication and in-time support from our organisations is crucial for everyone to have a peaceful mind and to keep the productivity up to achieve the target. We are continuing to improve the core work processes & technology. We are also working to enhance our performance management system to maximise productivity and to ensure UOB is a #Better place to work.
