Info

Listed on the Singapore Exchange, City Developments Limited (CDL) is a leading global real estate company with a network spanning 112 locations in 29 countries and regions. With a geographically diverse portfolio comprising residences, offices, hotels, serviced apartments, shopping malls and integrated developments, its diverse workforce of over 9,396 employees worldwide across various subsidiaries remains the organisation’s greatest asset.

CDL is strongly committed to be an employer of choice where its people can build fulfilling careers and develop professionally in a conducive and inclusive working environment. Through a three-pronged approach of developing, engaging and caring for employees, CDL is committed to driving productivity, employee satisfaction and talent retention for organisational excellence. Since 2019, CDL has been recognised as one of the Best Companies to Work For in Asia.

Foster Positive Coping

The transition to remote working was done swiftly last year, with our IT team strengthening our enterprise network with Cloud-based Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution to ensure that users and their devices have secured cloud access to applications, data and services. Immediate laptop purchases were made for 10% of our employees who did not have one. For new hires who joined us during the lockdown, laptops were delivered to their residences. These ensured that all employees were equipped with essential digital tools to facilitate communication and workflow under new work conditions.

Regular, timely updates and health advisories on the evolving COVID-19 situation were made available via email and intranet. Care packs consisting of masks, hand sanitiser, antiseptic wipes, disinfectant spray etc were provided to all employees. All high touch surfaces in the office are coated with antimicrobial disinfectant and hand sanitizers are placed in high traffic areas like the receptions, entrances and exits.

A new category (health hygiene related products) was introduced to our flexible benefits scheme to provide employees with greater choice and flexibility to cope with the pandemic. Key leaders took special efforts to check in with team members regularly and address concerns with transparency. The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), a hotline manned by a third-party psychologist providing support for issues concerning work, family matters, and interpersonal relationships, offers a safe space for our staff to share their challenges and learn coping strategies. Virtual programs focusing on well-being are provided to support staff as well.

We believe in the importance of a positive work environment as it reduces their stress level, boosts productivity, and increases job satisfaction. For some employees, their home environment may not be conducive for work. Last year, we launched the short-term rental housing assistance scheme where employees could stay in a residential property owned by the Company at discounted rates. For a group of employees who are unable to commute to and from Malaysia daily, complimentary accommodation is provided.

We took the pandemic as an opportunity to innovate the way we operate. To protect the well-being of our customer service officers, we embraced digitalisation, treating potential homebuyers to 3D virtual tours of CDL’s show flats as well as online sales presentations in the comfort of their homes. By stepping up our digital marketing efforts with virtual show flat tours and online sales presentations to navigate mandated closures of sales galleries and safe management measures, our staff were able to achieve resilient sales performance in our core Singapore market.

Our third consecutive win at HR Asia as one of Asia’s Best Employers to Work For, is a strong testament to our people-first commitment and affirmation as an employer of choice. We believe that inspired and engaged employees put their best foot forward, which commits us to being more creative in maintaining our culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation. Coupled with CDL’s forward-looking initiatives, we can build a resilient workforce that keeps pace with evolving changes in the future. This win goes out to all our staff for their trust, resilience and sticking together throughout these challenging times.

Stay Connected

We constantly engage our staff by keeping them updated on the company progress, plans and activities through various platforms. Last year’s EXCO dialogue sessions were conducted in a hybrid manner due to the pandemic. Interactive Q & A segment via app empowers our employees to ask questions anonymously. Feedback or suggestions provided by staff were addressed at the session, where possible. For those that require further consideration, these were worked on and shared with the employees at the next earliest opportunity.

Invest in Learning & Development

Our learning and development framework is created holistically, with well-defined learning paths for each level. Opportunities are provided to all employees to participate in a multitude of programs and workshops, covering technical skills, soft skills, personal management, and professional skills. Some of the training programs are delivered through mobile app and bite-sized information to better engage our employees. Training opportunities leading to qualifications are available as well. As we adapt swiftly to the new work arrangements due to the pandemic, we concurrently stepped up on training by expanding our suite of online capacity building offerings for our workforce. Webinars focusing on leadership building, digital tools, sustainability, occupational health and safety, and cultivation of healthy lifestyles and mental resilience were all well-received.

Engage our communities differently

With strong support and encouragement from the leadership team, CDL has been engaging stakeholders through active employee volunteerism to complement our community investments and deliver a more meaningful impact in the public sphere. Our dedicated employee-led volunteering body, City Sunshine Club (CSC) has been actively reaching out to the less fortunate and underprivileged, providing an avenue for CDL employees to serve the community. In 2020, the pandemic made it challenging to organise and participate in outreach events. Notwithstanding the restrictions and strict adherence to social distancing and safety measures, our employees managed to achieve a participation rate of 28.4% and clocked more than 320 volunteer manhours. The 2020 Assisi fundraising event attracted strong support from our subsidiaries, hotels and suppliers through an online carnival, which raised funds through e-stall sales. Also, in-kind sponsorship of lucky draw prizes and donations were raised by CDL to further support patients with cancer and terminal illnesses at Assisi Hospice.
