When we talk about how we back our colleagues, we talk about it in three key parts:

Diverse and inclusive teams, empowered voices

American Express fosters an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace where colleagues of all backgrounds feel they belong.

In 2020, American Express made additional investments to achieve full pay parity, reaching 100% pay equity for colleagues across genders globally. We also made sure that there’s a balanced representation at all levels of the company.

We’ve put a focus on our Self Identification (Self ID) tool globally. It allows colleagues to share with American Express voluntarily their gender identity and sexual orientation. As a result, our colleagues are empowered to bring their authentic selves to work, and we’ve see n good results.

To further support inclusion and diversity, we provide leadership development programs and workshops for all people leaders focused on belonging.

Our Colleague Networks

To help inspire a culture where differences are embraced and colleagues are enabled to bring their authentic selves to work, we maintain a strong backing for our Colleague Networks where our colleagues can find like minded individuals with shared experiences and perspectives.

In 2017, American Express Philippines launched its Pride+ Network for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Locally, we have made significant changes in our policies through a constant open conversation with the network members, from having all inclusive restrooms in our office to including same sex partners and dependents in our HMO and life insurance plans.

We also have our Women’s Interest Network (WIN) that provides a forum for our colleagues to support and promote the unique value that women bring to the workplace. In 2019, American Express launched the Ambition Project across all countries where we operate. The primary purpose of the campaign is to back women’s ambition across the enterprise.

We volunteer engagement groups that help further cultivate the sense of community and belonging in American Express. The Synergized Employee Engagement Network (SEEN) helps motivate colleagues by organizing various events that foster engagement and inclusion.

We also have a network called SPOTLIGHT comprised of volunteer colleagues who help ensure that we roll out our rewards and recognition events for the site.

Our global Serve2Gether Network also ensures that we capture our colleagues’ passion for community outreach and social development. Serve2Gether colleague volunteers work with partner organizations like Hands On Manila and Habitat for Humanity to organize outreach activities in various causes. In the past several years, we have done tree planting projects in the La Mesa Watershed, workshops on urban gardening in public schools around Metro Manila, hold the Dream in a Shoebox project, and the Manila Bay Coastal Clean Up. During the start of the pandemic in 2020, American Express Philippines also donated $100,000 to the Philippine General Hospital to support our local healthcare workers.

We continue to provide ways for our colleagues to participate in virtual events like Earth Hour. We have also invited members of the World Wide Fund for Nature to share tips on making our households sustainable.

Holistic wellbeing, continuous support

Our benefits package is one of our key value propositions for our colleagues. Our flexible benefits program allows our colleagues to select and customize their benefits to fit not only their essential needs but to include those that also matches their lifestyle and personal preferences. It includes choices for enhanced medical, optical dental benefits, domestic and international travel expenses, gym memberships, cinema tickets, health screenings, and more.

American Express also fully funds the coverage plan of all eligible dependents on a colleague’s first day. Our colleagues can enroll an unlimited number of dependents based on their civil status. We provide our colleagues with the option to cover dependents who are between 65 70 years old, and we also include extended dependents for married colleagues.

We also want to make sure that we take care of our colleagues’ long term life plans. Our retirement plan is a defined contribution plan where our colleagues can opt to contribute voluntarily, which the company matches.

Health and Wellbeing

We put a strong backing to our colleagues’ overall health by promoting good health, preventive care, and a culture of wellbeing through our Healthy Living program.

We provide teleconsultation services through Telehealth, offering a safe and convenient channel for our colleagues and their dependents needing medical care. We also provide free fitness coaching for individuals or groups, online workout sessions that are facilitator led, and cooking videos prepared by our concessionaire’s chef and nutritionist.

We continue to support our colleagues’ mental and emotional wellbeing as a much needed benefit during the pandemic, through our Healthy Minds program . We have enhanced our assistance program to virtually allow our colleagues and their eligible dependents to consult with mental health professionals 24/7. This covers prescribed medicines, treatment, laboratories, therapies, and hospitalization.

In the past year, we came to recognize the impact of COVID 19 on our colleagues’ total wellbeing, and we’ve rolled out Better Together to colleagues who are directly affected by COVID 19.

Better Together is a personalized mental wellbeing program to support further the mental and emotional wellbeing of colleagues who are on self quarantine or a recovery period. Colleagues can voluntarily sign up, and our Healthy Minds counselors proactively reach out to help and provide support. Counselors help manage our colleagues’ anxiety , stress, isolation, and uncertainty in their lives brought on by COVID 19.
